What a flatbed tow truck is and why it is the safest way to move a car in New Jersey

A flatbed, also called a rollback, is a tow truck whose bed tilts and slides to the ground so the vehicle is driven or winched up and carried with all four wheels off the road, strapped at the tires, with nothing dragging and nothing touching the body.

A wheel-lift picks up two wheels and lets the other two roll down the road. A flatbed picks up the whole car. That single difference is why some vehicles can only be moved on a flatbed and why owners of anything valuable, low, all-wheel-drive or electric ask for one by name. The bed hydraulically tilts and slides back until its edge sits on the pavement, the car is driven or winched up the incline, the bed levels and slides forward, and the car is strapped at all four tires. From that moment the vehicle is cargo, not a trailer, and it arrives exactly as it left.

How a rollback flatbed loads a car without touching the body

The bed comes down to the ground at a shallow angle. A running car with a driver in it is driven up. A car that will not run is pulled up by the winch cable attached to a proper recovery point, never to a bumper or suspension arm. Once the car is on the deck and the bed is level, the driver runs soft straps over each tire and ratchets them to the deck rails. Straps at the tires mean the suspension is free to move on the road and no chain or hook ever contacts paint, chrome or a control arm.

Flatbed vs wheel-lift: the short version

A wheel-lift is cheaper and quicker for a front-wheel-drive commuter car that rolls and steers, going a few miles to a shop. That is a fair choice and we offer it as local towing. For anything all-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive, electric, hybrid with an electric rear axle, lowered, long in the nose, expensive, or damaged so it will not roll straight, the wheel-lift is the wrong truck and the flatbed is the only truck. The dispatcher decides from the make and model and tells you why.

Why we ask what you drive before we send anything

A wheel-lift dragging an all-wheel-drive car for three miles can destroy the center differential. A wheel-lift under a lowered car scrapes the front splitter off on the first driveway apron. An electric car dragged on its drive wheels generates current through motors that were never meant to be spun by the road. Every one of those repairs costs more than the difference between the two trucks. Sixty seconds on the phone about the vehicle is how you pay once.

Flatbed towing for all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles: why two wheels on the ground can wreck the drivetrain

Every all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicle must be towed with all four wheels off the ground because lifting two and rolling the other two spins the center differential or transfer case without lubrication and can destroy it within a few miles.

Most of the SUVs on Route 22, most of the Subarus in Westfield and Cranford, every Audi Quattro, BMW xDrive, Mercedes 4MATIC and Volvo AWD, most pickups in four-wheel-drive, and a growing share of ordinary sedans send power to all four wheels. When two of those wheels turn and two do not, the gears that split power between the axles spin at a speed they were never designed for, with no oil flow. The damage is silent while it happens and expensive when it shows up.

Subaru, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and every SUV with a badge that says AWD

The owner's manual for each of these says the same thing in slightly different words: transport on a flatbed, or with all four wheels off the ground, or with the drive wheels on dollies. We do not read the manual on the shoulder; we already know. If the badge on the tailgate says AWD, 4MATIC, xDrive, Quattro, 4Motion, SH-AWD, Symmetrical, 4WD or 4x4, the answer is a flatbed and the dispatcher will not offer you anything else.

Pickups and body-on-frame SUVs in 4WD

A truck with a manual transfer case can sometimes be flat-towed in neutral with the transfer case in neutral, and some people will tell you a wheel-lift is fine. On a full-size pickup that is going to a shop because something already broke, we do not gamble on which position the transfer case is in. The flatbed takes the whole truck, and for anything heavier than a one-ton we dispatch medium-duty.

Symptoms that tell us the drivetrain has already been hurt

A whine that rises with speed. A clunk on turns. A burning smell after a short tow someone else did with the wrong truck. If your AWD car was dragged before you called us, tell the shop, because the repair estimate needs to include the transfer case. If it is our flatbed the first time, there is nothing to tell.

Where AWD flatbed calls come from

The Watchung hills on Route 22 and I-78, where an AWD car that overheated on the climb is sitting on the shoulder. Flatbed towing for Tesla and other electric vehicles: Tow Mode, skates and never dragging the drive wheels

Electric vehicles are towed on a flatbed only, loaded in the manufacturer's tow or transport mode where the car supports it, or on skates or dollies when it does not, because dragging an EV on its drive wheels generates current through the motors and can damage the drive unit.

A Tesla has no true neutral. Put it in what looks like neutral and it will still roll, but the motors are permanently connected to the wheels and turning the wheels turns the motors, which generate electricity into a system that is not expecting it. Rivian, Lucid, Polestar, the Hyundai Ioniq and Kia EV6, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, the Chevrolet Bolt and Equinox EV, the Nissan Ariya and the German EVs all have variations of the same rule in the manual: transport on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground.

Loading a Tesla in Transport Mode

Tesla's Transport Mode releases the parking brake and lets the car free-roll a short distance at walking speed so it can be winched onto the deck. It needs a working 12-volt system and a driver who knows where the setting lives in the menu. Ours do. If the 12-volt battery is dead, which is a common reason a Tesla will not respond at all, the car cannot enter Transport Mode and we go to skates.

Skates and dollies when the car will not free-roll

Wheel skates slide under each tire and let the car be rolled sideways or forward by hand onto the bed's approach. Dollies lift an axle on small wheels for a longer move. Either way, the drive wheels never turn under load. It takes longer than a Transport Mode load, and it is the correct answer, not a shortcut.

Dead 12-volt batteries, frozen door handles and locked charge ports

Many EV calls are not the high-voltage pack at all. The small 12-volt battery that runs the computers dies and the car is a brick: no screen, no doors, no gear selection. We can often jump the 12-volt system to wake the car, enter Transport Mode, and then load it properly. If the car is out of charge, we take it to the nearest fast charger you choose or to your driveway.

Hybrids with an electric rear axle

A Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, a Highlander Hybrid, a Lexus AWD hybrid and several others put an electric motor on the rear axle. They are AWD in every way that matters to a tow and go on the flatbed. A front-wheel-drive Prius that rolls and steers can ride a wheel-lift, and we will tell you the difference on the phone.

Low, long-nosed, expensive and irreplaceable cars ride on a flatbed with the approach angle bridged by ramps and boards, soft straps at the tires and photographs at pickup and delivery, so the car comes off the deck exactly as it went on.

The owners in Short Hills, Summit, Westfield, Livingston, Montclair and Hoboken who call for a flatbed usually have a specific reason: the car is worth more than the truck, the front splitter sits four inches off the ground, or the car is a forty-year-old original that has never had a strap on it. Bridging the approach angle with ramps and boards

A flatbed's incline is shallow, but a car with a long front overhang or a lowered stance can still touch the deck edge at the transition. We carry race ramps and boards to raise the front wheels before the transition so the chin clears. It adds a few minutes to the load and saves a splitter, a lip or a fiberglass nose.

Soft straps only, never chains, never hooks on the body

Tire straps wrap the tread and ratchet to the deck rails. Nothing goes through a wheel, nothing hooks a control arm, nothing touches a painted surface. On a car with wheel-arch clearance too tight for a standard strap we use axle straps with sleeves around the lower control arm, and we tell you first.

Classics with no recovery points and cars with no key

A classic with a bumper you cannot pull on and no factory tow eye is winched from the frame or a subframe crossmember with a strap around the member, not a hook into it. A car with no key and a locked steering column goes on skates or a dolly under the locked axle. The dispatcher asks about both before the truck leaves.

Photos at both ends and a receipt an adjuster accepts

Before the strap goes on and after it comes off, the driver photographs every panel. You get the itemized receipt with the pickup, destination and mileage. For a car on an agreed-value policy, that record is what the insurer asks for, and it is what we would want if it were ours.

Flatbed towing for cars that will not roll, steer or start: winch, dolly, skates and boards

A car with a seized engine, a locked transmission, a missing wheel, a bent knuckle or crash damage is winched up the flatbed deck at an angle, sometimes with a dolly under one corner or skates under the tires, instead of being dragged.

Most breakdowns leave the car able to roll. The ones that do not are why a flatbed carries a winch, a snatch block, a set of skates, a dolly and a pile of boards. A seized engine locks the transmission on many automatics. A collision folds a wheel under the fender. A curb strike bends a tie rod so the wheel points sideways. A broken axle drops a corner. None of these can be walked onto a bed, and none of them is a problem for the truck.

Winching a car that will not roll straight

The cable goes to a recovery point, the driver pulls at a shallow angle and a slow speed, and the car climbs the bed while he watches the tires. A wheel that will not turn is put on a dolly or a skate so it slides instead of scrubbing. A car pulled at the wrong angle drags its bumper on the deck edge; a car pulled right does not touch anything but the tires and the skates.

Cars nose-in in a tight spot or a garage

A car parked nose-in with a dead engine cannot be winched straight back if the aisle behind it is too short. Skates under all four tires let the driver push it sideways and line it up. In a parking deck under seven feet the flatbed cannot enter at all; the car is dollied or skated to the entrance and loaded outside. Tell the dispatcher the garage name and level and the driver plans for it before he leaves Linden.

Crash damage and the accident tow

Exit 13 is home, but the Turnpike shoulder itself is served by the Turnpike Authority's authorized garages, not by a private flatbed; the truck lanes and the express lanes between 11 and 14 have no exits, so the authorized truck is the only one that can reach you there. Can you tow a Tesla on a flatbed?

My car is all-wheel-drive. Do I really need a flatbed?

Yes. Lifting two wheels and rolling the other two spins the center differential or transfer case dry and can destroy it in a few miles. Every AWD and 4WD manual says the same thing. We will not send anything else.

My car is lowered. Will it scrape going up the bed?

Not with us. We carry race ramps and boards to raise the front wheels through the transition so the chin clears. Say the car is lowered on the call and the driver brings them.

The car will not roll or steer. Can a flatbed still take it?

Yes. It is winched up the deck at a shallow angle, with a dolly or skates under any wheel that will not turn. A car that will not roll is exactly what the winch is for.

My car is in a parking garage with a low ceiling. Can a flatbed reach it?

Usually not inside; most decks are under seven feet. We skate or dolly the car to the entrance and load it outside. Tell the dispatcher the garage name and the level.

Will the car be strapped or chained?

Strapped at the tires with soft wheel straps. Chains never touch the body or the suspension. On a car with tight wheel arches we use sleeved axle straps and tell you first.

Can I ride along in the flatbed?

In most cases one passenger can ride in the cab. Tell the dispatcher how many people are with the car.

Can you tow a motorcycle on the flatbed?

Will my insurance or roadside plan pay for a flatbed tow?

Can you tow me off the New Jersey Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway?
