A motorcycle is not a small car. It cannot be hooked by a wheel-lift, it cannot be dragged, and it cannot be strapped to a deck by someone who has only ever strapped cars. The bike has to stand vertical, the front wheel has to be locked, the forks have to be compressed evenly, and the straps have to touch metal, not paint. Get one of those wrong and the rider gets a bent bar, a scratched tank or a bike that walked across the deck on the first hard brake.

The locking front-wheel chock that holds the bike vertical

The front wheel rolls into a spring-loaded chock that closes around the tire and holds the bike upright without a kickstand and without a person holding it. That is the difference between a bike that can be strapped calmly and one that is fighting the driver while he reaches for a ratchet. The chock is sized to the tire; tell the dispatcher if you are on a fat-tire cruiser or a skinny dirt bike front so the right insert is on the truck.

Soft loops on the triple tree, never straps on the paint

Soft loops are wide nylon slings that wrap the lower triple tree or the frame and give the ratchet strap a place to pull without touching bars, tank, fairing or fork tubes. Four straps, two forward and two rear, compress the forks evenly and pin the bike to the deck. A strap over the seat or around a mirror is how a car-only company does it, and it is how tanks get scratched and mirrors get snapped.

Why a motorcycle rides on a flatbed, never on a wheel-lift or in a sling

A sling tow or a wheel-lift adapted for a bike puts the whole weight on one wheel and the bike's balance in the hands of a strap. A flatbed carries it. There is no scenario in which we tow a motorcycle any other way, and if you have been quoted a sling tow by someone else, that is the reason to call us instead. Where motorcycle breakdowns happen within 45 minutes of Linden and how the call goes on each road

Most motorcycle towing calls come from Route 22, Route 27, the Parkway and Turnpike exits at Clark, Cranford and Linden, the riding roads out toward Watchung and Route 202, and garages in Hoboken, Jersey City and Newark where a bike sat all winter and will not start.

Bikes break down in different places than cars. Riders commute on the Turnpike and the Parkway like everyone else, but they also ride for the ride, which means the calls come from hills, curves and back roads that a car-only company has never had to find. Our dispatcher asks the same four questions as always, but for a bike the location question matters more, because the shoulder you are on decides whether our truck can pull in behind you at all, or whether, on the Turnpike and the Parkway, the Authority's authorized garage has to bring the bike off the highway first.

The Parkway between the Union toll plaza and Raritan has long runs with no exit and shoulders that narrow to nothing under the bridges, and the Turnpike's express lanes between Exits 11 and 14 have no way off at all. Turnpike and Parkway shoulders are served by the Authority's authorized garages. Book with us and we take the car from the exit or the garage's lot. A bike with a flat rear that the authorized truck drops at the Clark or Cranford exit is a few minutes from our yard, and the same goes for Exit 13 on the Turnpike. Tell our dispatcher northbound or southbound, car lanes or truck lanes, and the exit the bike will come off at, and the flatbed with the chock is waiting there. State Police will often sit behind you with their lights until the authorized truck arrives; stay behind the barrier and let them make that call.

Route 22, Route 27, Route 35 and the local highways

Route 22 through Union, Mountainside, Scotch Plains and Watchung is a bike road on a Sunday and a repair-shop corridor every other day. Its jughandles and hills produce dropped chains, overheated air-cooled engines and low-side crashes on the exits. Route 27 through Rahway and Metuchen and Route 35 through Woodbridge and Perth Amboy are stop-and-go, which kills weak batteries and clutches. Every spring the same call: a bike that sat in a Hudson County garage since November, battery flat, tires low, sometimes a seized brake. A flatbed rarely fits in the deck, so we walk or dolly the bike to the entrance and load outside. Tell the dispatcher the garage name and the level. Many of these end as a jump start rather than a tow, and we quote both on the same call.

Driveways, dealer lots and the shop that is closed on Sunday

A bike that will not start in a Westfield driveway, a bike bought on Marketplace in Edison that needs to get home, a bike due at a dealer on Route 22 or Route 1 for a recall. Bike types

Sport bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, dirt bikes, scooters and trikes: how each one loads on our flatbed

Every motorcycle rides upright in a front-wheel chock with soft-loop straps, but sport bikes, cruisers, baggers, dual-sports, scooters, trikes and sidecar rigs each need a different chock insert, strap point and deck position, which is why the dispatcher asks what you ride.

Sport bikes and superbikes with clip-ons and fairings

Clip-on bars give the straps nowhere to go, and a fairing hides the frame. The soft loops go on the lower triple tree under the fairing nose, and the rear straps go to the subframe or passenger peg mounts. We do not strap over the tank or through the fairing. Race-prepped bikes with no mirrors or lights load the same way; tell us if the front stand pins are in place so the driver avoids them.

Cruisers, baggers and full-dress touring bikes

Heavy, long and low. A Road King or a Gold Wing needs the ramp angle bridged so the frame does not scrape on the deck edge, and the bags need to come off or be strapped shut so they do not swing. The chock takes the wider front tire with a different insert. The forward straps go to the lower triple tree or the crash bar mounts, never the bars themselves.

Dual-sports, adventure bikes and dirt bikes

Tall, light and narrow front tires. The chock insert changes, the straps go to the triple tree and the rear subframe, and the long-travel forks are compressed just enough to pin the bike, not bottomed. Dirt bikes with no plates ride the same way; we do not need the bike to be street-legal to move it, only proof it is yours.

Scooters, mopeds and small-displacement bikes

A scooter's plastic bodywork hides every strap point. We use the frame under the floorboard and the steering stem, with the front wheel chocked. Vespas, Hondas, Chinese-import scooters and e-scooters with a plate all load fine. Do not let anyone lay a scooter on its side in a pickup bed; the oil ends up in the airbox.

Trikes, Can-Am Spyders and sidecar rigs

Three wheels do not fit a chock. A trike or Spyder is loaded like a small car: ramps bridged, strapped at four points on the frame or the wheels, no chock. A sidecar rig loads the same way with an extra strap on the sidecar frame. Tell the dispatcher it is a trike so the driver leaves the chock inserts and brings the wheel straps.

Electric motorcycles and e-bikes with plates

A Zero, a LiveWire or an Energica loads like any other bike, but the driver will ask you to power it fully down and will not push it with the motor engaged. Battery-fire risk after a crash is real; a bike that was in a collision with a damaged pack rides on the deck with the straps only, away from the cab, and goes to a shop that knows EVs.

Tell the dispatcher the make and model. That is how the right chock insert and straps are on the truck when it arrives.

After a motorcycle crash we right the bike, drain leaking fuel or oil if it is unsafe to move as is, load it upright in the chock, photograph it at pickup and delivery, and deliver it to your shop or garage instead of a rotation yard that charges daily storage.

A dropped bike is different from a crashed car in one important way: the bike still needs to go somewhere, and most of the time it can still be loaded upright. A bent rim, a snapped lever, a folded peg and a cracked fairing do not stop a flatbed. What matters is that whoever picks it up does not do more damage getting it on the deck, and that the bike goes to a shop you chose rather than a yard the police chose.

Call your own tow before the rotation truck takes the bike

When police respond to a crash and nobody has called a tow, they call the town's rotation company, and the bike goes to that company's yard, where storage is charged by the day and release means a trip in person during business hours. If you are able, call (908) 444-0129 while you wait for the officer and tell the officer a private tow is on the way and where the bike is going. In most Union, Middlesex and Essex County towns the officer will release a bike to a private tow that arrives in a reasonable time. From Linden that is usually quick enough. Righting a bike that is on its side

The driver lifts from the bars and the rear grab point, not the fairing. If fuel is running from the tank vent or the carb bowls, the bike is righted immediately to stop it. A bike that was down for a while may have oil in the airbox; we tell you so you do not try to start it at the shop without draining it.

Loading a bike with a bent wheel, seized brake or locked steering

A bent front rim still goes in the chock if it turns; if it does not, the front wheel goes on a dolly and the bike is winched up the deck. A seized brake means a dolly under that wheel. Locked steering, whether from the lock or from a crushed triple tree, means the bike is pushed straight up the ramp on the dolly and chocked. None of these change the price the dispatcher quoted unless the bike has to be winched, and that is said on the call.

Photos, receipts and what the adjuster wants

We photograph the bike at pickup and at delivery. The receipt shows the pickup location, the destination, mileage and the service. If the other driver was at fault, their liability coverage typically reimburses the tow; your own collision coverage does if you have it. If the bike is already sitting in a rotation yard, we can pick it up on a signed release, pay the yard on your behalf and add it to the receipt, and stop the storage clock the same day.

Motorcycle roadside assistance: jump starts, flat tires, chains and fuel before you need a tow at all

Not every motorcycle call is a tow; a technician can jump a dead bike battery, plug a tubeless tire, deliver fuel or reset a chain on the roadside, and the flatbed is dispatched from the same call only if the bike still will not ride.

Jump starting a motorcycle battery

Bike batteries are small and die fast in the cold and after a winter of sitting. Our jump packs have a low-current setting and the tech knows where the terminals hide under the seat or the side cover. If the bike starts and the charging voltage is good, you ride away. If the tester says the battery is done, we tell you and can tow the bike to a shop or you can ride straight to a parts store while it is running. Details on the jump start page.

Flat motorcycle tires on the road

A tubeless tire with a nail can sometimes be plugged and inflated roadside enough to reach a shop at low speed; a tube tire or a sidewall cut cannot. The tech carries plugs and air. If the tire is not safe to ride, the bike goes on the flatbed to the tire shop you choose. Route 22 and Route 1 have several that mount motorcycle tires, and the dispatcher can name them.

Chains, cables and fuel

A thrown chain that is not broken can often be reset on the roadside. A snapped clutch cable cannot be fixed there, but the bike can be ridden clutchless by a rider who knows how, or towed. Running out of fuel on the Parkway between service areas is common on small tanks; the Parkway shoulder itself is the Authority's authorized garage's to serve, but in a service area lot or on any other road the fuel delivery page covers it.

Locked out of a top box or lost the ignition key

We do not cut keys. A bike with a lost key and locked steering goes on the dolly and the flatbed to a dealer or a locksmith who can cut one. Tell the dispatcher it is locked so the driver brings the dolly.

From Linden we reach the Turnpike and Parkway exits, Routes 1 & 9, 22, 27 and 35, I-78 and I-287, and the riding roads through the Watchung Reservation and out Route 202 inside the same 45-minute window as every other tow; on the two Authority roads the shoulder itself belongs to the authorized garages and we take the bike from the exit.

Clark and Cranford exits are minutes from the yard. Long no-exit stretches, narrow shoulders under bridges, and the two service areas are the only fuel between the Union plaza and Raritan. The shoulder is the Authority's authorized garage's; we take the bike from the exit or their lot. Get the bike as far right as possible and yourself behind the barrier. Say northbound or southbound and the nearest exit number.

Exit 13 is ours. Car lanes or truck lanes matters; the express lanes have no way off between 11 and 14. State Police often respond first and hold the lane while the Authority's authorized truck loads the bike; ours meets it at the exit or the garage's lot.

How much motorcycle towing costs in New Jersey and what is and is not on the bill

A motorcycle tow is a flat hook fee plus a per-mile rate to your destination, quoted on the call, with no chock fee, no night or weekend surcharge and no storage; a roadside jump, plug or fuel delivery is one flat price.

Hook fee plus mileage

Same as a car. The hook fee covers dispatch, loading with the chock and straps and the driver's time on scene. Mileage is pickup to drop-off. Inside Union County and the near side of Middlesex and Essex most bike tows are within the base mileage.

What you are not charged for

The chock. The soft loops. A passenger in the cab. Night, weekend or holiday. A dolly under a locked wheel. Storage, because the bike goes where you said. Fuel surcharge. If any of those appear on a bill from anyone, you were quoted by a car company that does not want your bike.

Scheduled bike moves and dealer runs

What a rider should do while waiting for a motorcycle tow on a New Jersey highway

Get the bike onto the shoulder or the grass, get yourself behind the guardrail with your helmet and jacket on, keep the hazards or a taillight on if the bike has power, keep your phone charged, and do not accept a tow from a truck you did not call.

Bike and rider off the pavement

A bike on the shoulder is narrow and hard to see. Push it as far right as it will go, onto the grass if there is any. Then get yourself behind the guardrail, not next to the bike. Leave the jacket and helmet on; you are more visible and more protected.

Lights, phone and paperwork

If the bike has power, leave the taillight or hazards on. Keep the phone charged; the driver calls when he is minutes out. Have your registration and insurance card, which are usually in the tail or under the seat, out before the bike is loaded.

Do not take the first truck that stops

On some highways unsolicited trucks stop at breakdowns and charge what they like, and they will load your bike with a strap over the seat. Ours says The NJ Towing Service on the door and the driver says your name.

Not every motorcycle move is a breakdown; the same flatbed with the chock is booked by the day for dealer service drops, track-day runs, the fall move into storage and the spring move out, and project or estate bikes that do not run and may not have a plate, all at the same flat hook-plus-mileage price with no rush fee for booking ahead.

Dealer service drops and pickups when you cannot ride both ways

A bike that needs a recall, a valve check or new tires has to get to the dealer, and a rider with one bike and a job cannot ride it there and get home. We pick the bike up from your garage in Edison, Cranford or Bayonne on the morning you choose, deliver it to the dealer or independent shop before they open, and bring it back the day it is done. The shop signs the receipt at both ends. Baggers and touring bikes ride with the bags strapped shut; sport bikes go on the deck with the fairing untouched. It costs the same as a breakdown tow of the same distance, and a round trip booked together is quoted as one number. Riders in Union County often use this for the Hudson County and Bergen dealers they would otherwise have to ride through Route 3 traffic to reach.

Track days and race weekends without a trailer

A race-prepped bike with no lights, no mirrors and slicks is not street legal and cannot be ridden to the circuit. Riders without a trailer book the flatbed for the run south on the Turnpike and the Parkway the evening before, with stands, tire warmers and a gear bag in the cab. The bike loads in the chock with the front stand pins noted so the straps miss them. If a session ends in the gravel, the same dispatcher sends the truck back to bring the bike home rather than leaving it in a paddock overnight, and a bike that went down at the track is loaded the same way the accident towing page describes for the road, with photos at pickup for whoever is paying for the plastics.

Seasonal storage: into the unit in November, out of it in April

Riders without a garage in Jersey City, Hoboken and Newark move bikes into rented storage in the fall and out again in the spring. The bike often will not start on the way out because the battery sat for five months, and the chain, the tires and the fuel are all suspect, so the smart move is a flatbed to the shop for the spring service rather than a first ride on a bike that has not turned a wheel since Thanksgiving. We do both legs, including a jump and a battery test at pickup if you want to know whether it needs a battery before the shop tells you. A jump start that holds saves the tow; one that does not is quoted on the spot.

Project bikes, barn finds and estate bikes with no title, no plate or no key

A bike bought on a bill of sale, a father's bike coming out of a shed, or a project with the engine in a box does not run, may not have a plate and sometimes has no key. It still goes on the deck. Flat tires go on the dolly, a locked fork gets the front wheel dollied and the bike winched up the ramp, and loose parts ride in bins in the cab, not on the deck. What we need is proof you are entitled to move it: a bill of sale, an estate letter, or a registration in your name or the seller's name with the seller present. Buying and selling: delivery to the new owner or pickup from the seller

Private sales across the map, from a seller in Woodbridge to a buyer in Montclair or the other way, usually end with one of them wondering how the bike gets home. Book the truck with the pickup address, the drop address and a time both parties can be there. The driver photographs the bike at pickup so the buyer sees the condition it left in, and the seller's signature on the receipt closes the handoff. Payment can come from either party by card or over the phone before the truck rolls. When one bike goes down on a group ride to the shore or the hills: Route 35, Route 202, the Watchung roads and the ride back

On a group ride with one bike down, the rider and the bike go in the flatbed while the group keeps riding, because the dispatcher only needs the road, the nearest exit or cross street and the make of the bike, and the truck meets the group at a diner lot or a gas station instead of the shoulder whenever the bike can be pushed that far.

Sunday rides from Union and Middlesex County go two ways: south on Route 35 and Route 36 through the Bayshore to Sandy Hook and Red Bank, or west on Route 22 and Route 202 into the Watchung hills and the Somerset and Morris back roads. Both end at a diner and both, some weeks, end with a bike that will not restart after breakfast. The group ride problem is not the breakdown; it is eight riders standing in a gas station lot deciding who waits. The answer is that nobody has to. Route 35, Route 36 and the Bayshore run through Keyport, Middletown and Red Bank

The shore roads are flat and fast and hard on bikes that have sat. A cruiser that ran fine to the Keyport waterfront will not turn over after an hour parked in the sun; a sport bike picks up a drywall screw on Route 36 in Atlantic Highlands. From Linden the truck reaches Middletown and Red Bank inside the 45-minute map on a normal Sunday, longer on a summer weekend when the Parkway is a parking lot from Raritan to the Driscoll Bridge, and the dispatcher says so. Route 202, Route 22 and the Watchung Reservation roads into Somerset and Morris

The hill roads west of Route 22 are where bikes go down slowly rather than break. Gravel washed across a corner on the reservation roads through Mountainside, wet leaves under the trees on the back roads out of Bernardsville, a downhill stop sign in Basking Ridge with a cold front tire. A low-side at parking-lot speed bends a lever, cracks a fairing and scuffs a bar end, and the rider is usually fine and usually cannot ride the bike home with a bent shifter. Getting the bike off the shoulder and to a place the truck can load safely

If the bike rolls, push it. A shoulder on Route 22 or Route 35 is no place to load a motorcycle, and a gas station apron, a diner lot or a side street a hundred yards away is.
