Tip #79: A Porsche or any low sports car needs a flatbed and a few honest details on the phone

A Porsche or other low sports car should be carried on a flatbed. Tell the dispatcher the model, whether it is all-wheel drive, and anything that lowers the front, such as a splitter or lowered suspension.

Tip #79 in one line

The details that protect the car

Sports cars are towed badly in two ways: dragged on a wheel-lift that scrapes the nose, or loaded too steeply onto a bed that catches the front lip. Both are avoidable when the dispatcher knows what is coming. When you call (908) 444-0129, give the make and model, and whether it is all-wheel drive. Porsche, for example, sells all-wheel-drive versions of several models, often with a 4 in the name, and the owner's manual says how each should be transported.

Then mention ride height. A factory sport suspension, a lowered setup, a carbon splitter, side skirts or a long front overhang all change how the car is loaded. If the car has a front-axle lift system, say so, and say whether the car has power to use it.

Why a flatbed

A flatbed carries the car instead of towing it, so the drivetrain does not turn and the bodywork never meets the road. The car is strapped at the tires, not through the suspension or the bodywork. On a low car, the driver plans the loading angle before the winch moves, and the car goes up slowly.

Where to send it and what it costs

You choose the destination: a dealer, a specialist shop, a detailer, a track-day garage, or home. The price is quoted on the phone before the truck leaves the yard: a flat hook fee plus a per-mile rate to the destination. There are no surcharges for nights, weekends or holidays. For a trip to a specialist farther away, ask about long-distance towing.

If the car will not start, tell us whether it has a battery in an unusual place, as many sports cars do. A tech can sometimes get it going on the spot with a jump start, but a car with a warning light or a mechanical noise should not be driven to see what happens.

Take photos of the car from all four sides before loading. It is a good habit with any tow, and it settles questions later. The flatbed towing guide explains the load step by step.

Before the driver arrives, clear the cabin of loose items, remove anything clipped to the front plate or the splitter, and leave the steering wheel unlocked if the car allows it. If the car has a removable roof panel or a soft top, make sure it is secured. Those small things keep the load quick and avoid surprises in transit.

If the car is in a private garage with a steep apron, mention it. A steep driveway is one of the most common places for a low car's front to scrape, and the driver will want to plan the exit before the car is moving.
