New Jersey towing questions, answered before you call the tow truck

These are the questions drivers ask our Linden dispatchers every day, answered the way we answer them on the phone. If yours is not here, call (908) 444-0129 at any hour and get the answer and a flat quote in the same call.

How fast a tow truck reaches you in Unio

How fast a tow truck reaches you in Union, Essex and Hudson counties and the rest of our 45-minute map

Trucks are dispatched 24/7 from Linden to every town within roughly 45 minutes, and the dispatcher gives you a real arrival window based on where the nearest truck is when you call.

How long does it usually take a tow truck to arrive?

It depends on how far you are from Linden and what the roads are doing. Every town we cover sits in one of three typical drive-time bands from the yard: under 20 minutes, 20 to 35 minutes, or 35 to 45 minutes. Rush hour and storms stretch those numbers, so the dispatcher gives you an actual window on the call based on where the nearest available truck is right then.

Which towns and counties does The NJ Towing Service cover?

Every town within about 45 minutes of Linden, across Union, Middlesex, Essex, Hudson, Somerset, Morris, Monmouth, Bergen and Passaic counties. Union County is home base and sits entirely in the fastest band; the Passaic County towns and the far edges of Morris, Bergen and Monmouth sit in the outer ring. The service area page lists every town with its drive-time band.

Is there a tow yard or shop I can drive to?

No. We are a mobile service-area business dispatched from Linden, at the junction of the Turnpike, Routes 1 & 9 and Route 27. There is no walk-in shop and no published street address because every job is done where your car is. You call dispatch, and the truck or the technician comes to you.

Do you answer at 3 a.m., on Sundays and on holidays?

Yes. Dispatch is staffed around the clock, every day of the year, by our own people, and the person who answers is the person who sends the truck. A breakdown at 3 a.m. on a holiday is quoted on the same flat price structure as a weekday afternoon, with no night or holiday surcharge.

What if my car is outside the 45-minute area?

Call anyway. The 45 minutes describes our emergency-response area, not a hard boundary. Long distance towing and scheduled runs go to the shore, New York City, Long Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and farther by arrangement, at one quoted price built from the route mileage, and a destination outside the area is quoted at the per-mile rate.

What a tow truck costs in New Jersey and

What a tow truck costs in New Jersey and how you pay: flat quotes, cards and insurance receipts

Every job gets one flat price on the phone before the truck rolls (hook fee plus mileage for a tow, a single flat price for roadside work) and you pay on site by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash.

How is the price of a tow worked out?

A tow is a hook fee, which covers dispatching the truck, loading the car and the driver's time on scene, plus a per-mile rate from pickup to the destination you choose. The dispatcher adds the two and quotes you one total before the truck leaves Linden. The receipt matches the quote, and there is no separate drop fee.

Why don't you list prices on the website?

Because a number on a page cannot know where you are, what you drive or how far the car is going. A flatbed for an AWD SUV going thirty miles is a different job from a wheel-lift for a sedan going three. A quote on the phone takes about thirty seconds and is exact. Call (908) 444-0129, ask, and hang up if you do not like it.

Will the price go up at night, on weekends or in a snowstorm?

No. There is no night surcharge, no weekend or holiday surcharge, no fuel surcharge, no administrative fee and no charge for a passenger in the cab. The flat structure is the same at any hour, any day and in any weather. If a driver ever asks for a different number than dispatch quoted for the same job, call dispatch from the scene.

How can I pay the tow truck driver?

All major credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and cash, paid on site when the job is done. Businesses with a fleet account get one monthly invoice itemized by unit number, with net terms for established accounts. Scheduled long-distance runs take a deposit at booking and the balance on delivery.

Can I get my money back from my insurer or roadside plan?

Often, yes. Collision coverage usually reimburses a tow to a repair shop after an accident, and most roadside memberships reimburse an out-of-network tow or service up to the plan's limit. Every job comes with an itemized receipt showing date, pickup, drop-off, mileage, the vehicle and the service performed, which is what adjusters and plan forms ask for.

Towing AWD

Towing AWD, electric, motorcycle and heavy-duty vehicles in New Jersey: which truck your vehicle needs

The dispatcher picks the truck from your make and model: flatbeds for AWD, 4x4, electric, lowered and non-rolling vehicles and for motorcycles, wheel-lifts for ordinary cars that roll and steer, and medium or heavy-duty wreckers for commercial units.

Does my car need a flatbed or is a wheel-lift fine?

All-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive, electric, lowered and long-overhang cars, and anything that will not roll straight, ride on a flatbed with all four wheels on the deck. A front- or rear-wheel-drive car that rolls and steers can usually go on a wheel-lift for a little less. Tell the dispatcher the year, make and model and we choose the right truck the first time.

Can you tow a Tesla or another electric car?

Yes, on a flatbed only. Electric vehicles have no true neutral and should never have their drive wheels dragged, even a few feet. Where the car supports it we put it in Tow Mode so it rolls onto the deck; otherwise we load it on skates. Tell us the model so the driver arrives with the right straps and skates.

How do you move a motorcycle without damaging it?

Upright on a flatbed, with the front wheel in a locking chock and soft loops around the frame and triple tree so straps never touch paint. Never a sling and never on its side. Sport bikes, cruisers, touring bikes, dirt bikes, scooters and trikes all load the same way. See motorcycle towing for crash recovery and non-running bikes.

Do you tow box trucks, buses and tractor-trailers?

Yes. Medium duty covers box trucks, cutaways, sprinter and step vans and small buses; heavy duty covers loaded straight trucks, tractors with or without a trailer, and coaches. Tell the dispatcher the GVWR from the door sticker, whether it is loaded and whether it rolls and steers, so the right class of wrecker is sent and quoted before it rolls.

Can you get a car out of a low parking garage?

Usually, yes. Many decks are too low for a flatbed to enter, so the driver brings skates or a dolly, moves the car to the entrance and loads it outside. Cars nosed into tight spots are moved sideways on skates. Tell the dispatcher the garage name, the level and the posted clearance if you can see it.

Roadside help without a tow in New Jerse

Roadside help without a tow in New Jersey: jump starts, flat tires, lockouts, fuel and winch-outs

Jump starts, flat tire changes, car lockouts, fuel delivery and winch-outs are done where the car sits, each at one flat price with no membership, and if it turns into a tow the flatbed comes from the same call.

Do I need AAA or a roadside membership to call you?

No. You call, the technician comes, and you pay for that one service by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or cash. Many roadside plans and insurance policies reimburse an out-of-network call anyway, and the itemized receipt we hand you is what their forms ask for. The roadside assistance page covers every service in detail.

My car only clicks when I turn the key. What will the technician do?

Connect a commercial lithium jump pack rated for cars, trucks and diesels, start the engine, then load-test the battery and check charging voltage. That tells you in a couple of minutes whether to drive for a while or plan on a new battery. Hybrids are jumped through their 12-volt auxiliary battery. If the battery is finished, the tow to a shop is quoted on the same call.

I have a flat. Can you put the spare on, and what if I don't have one?

With a usable spare, the technician installs it using a floor jack, impact gun, wheel-lock sockets and a torque wrench, with the truck's amber lights between you and traffic. With no spare, or a flat spare, the tow to the tire shop you choose is quoted on the same call and you do not pay a second callout. Details on the flat tire change page.

Can you open my car without damaging it, and can you make a new key?

We open locked cars and trunks with inflatable wedges and long-reach tools, so there is no coat hanger, no broken glass and no harm to wiring or side airbags. We check ID and registration after entry. We do not cut or program keys; if the key is lost, we can tow the car to a dealer or automotive locksmith.

I ran out of gas. How much fuel do you bring?

Enough regular unleaded or diesel to reach the next station, delivered at a flat price plus the fuel at cost. Diesels that ran fully dry may need bleeding, and the technician knows the procedure on most trucks and vans. If you put the wrong fuel in, do not start the engine; the car goes to a shop to be drained.

My car is stuck in snow or a ditch but isn't damaged. Do I need a tow?

Usually not. A winch out rigs a strap to a proper recovery point, never the suspension or bumper, and pulls the car straight back onto solid ground, often with a snatch block for a clean line. Most of the time you check it over and drive away. If something is bent or leaking, the tow is quoted on scene with no second callout.

Accident towing

Accident towing, insurance and police rotation tows, and getting off the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway

After a crash, calling your own tow lets you choose the body shop instead of a rotation yard; on the Turnpike and Parkway the Authority's authorized garages handle the shoulder and we take the car from the exit or the garage's lot.

Should I call my own tow after an accident, or wait for the police to call one?

If nobody is hurt and the car is not blocking a live lane, call your own tow, then tell the officer a private tow is on the way and where the car is going. When police call the town's rotation company, the car goes to that yard and daily storage plus a release fee start. Calling us keeps the destination and the bill in your hands. See accident towing.

The police already called a rotation tow. Is it too late?

Not always. If our truck can arrive in a reasonable time and the scene is not blocking traffic, many officers will release the car to a private tow. If the car has already gone to a rotation yard, we can collect it on a signed release, pay the yard on your behalf and move it to your shop the same day, which stops the storage charges.

Will my insurance pay for the tow after a crash?

Usually. With collision coverage, the tow to a repair shop is part of the claim, and if the other driver was at fault their liability coverage typically reimburses it. We photograph the vehicle at pickup and drop-off and give you an itemized receipt with pickup, destination and mileage. Submit it with your claim number.

Can you tow me off the New Jersey Turnpike or the Garden State Parkway?

Not from the shoulder. The Turnpike Authority restricts towing and roadside work on both roads to its authorized garages, and we are not one yet. Call us anyway: the dispatcher tells you how to reach the Authority's roadside help, and once the authorized truck has the car off the highway we take it from the exit or the garage's lot to the shop or driveway you choose, at our flat quoted price.

Which highways do you respond to directly?

Everything except the Turnpike and Parkway shoulders is a direct dispatch from Linden, including Routes 1 & 9, Route 22, Route 27, Route 35, I-78, I-280, I-287, Route 3, Route 46 and every local street within the service area. Tell the dispatcher the road, your direction of travel and the nearest exit, mile marker or cross street.

Booking a tow truck in New Jersey

Booking a tow truck in New Jersey: what the dispatcher asks, where the car goes and what happens when the driver arrives

The dispatcher asks where you are, what you drive, what happened and where the car should go, then quotes a flat price and an arrival window; the truck rolls when you approve and the driver calls when he is a few minutes out.

What will the dispatcher ask me when I call?

Four things: exactly where you are (road, direction and nearest exit, or the address or cross streets), what happened, the year, make and model, and where the car should go. Those answers decide whether a technician, a wheel-lift or a flatbed is sent and set the flat price. If you are not sure whether your car is AWD, give the model and we will know.

Where will my car be taken?

Wherever you choose: your mechanic, a dealer, a body shop or your own driveway. We never take a car to a storage yard we picked, so there is no daily storage on your bill. If the shop is closed when we arrive, the car can be left in its lot with the key in the drop box, or held and delivered first thing in the morning.

Can I ride in the tow truck with my car?

In most cases one passenger can ride in the cab to the destination, and there is no charge for it. Tell the dispatcher how many people are with the car when you call so the plan accounts for everyone, especially at night or on a highway where waiting for a second ride is not safe.

How do I know the truck that shows up is really yours?

Our driver calls you when he is a few minutes out and, on arrival, says the company name and your name. Do not accept a tow from a truck that shows up without being called; on some roads unsolicited trucks stop at breakdowns and charge whatever they like. If in doubt, call dispatch at (908) 444-0129 and confirm before anything is hooked.

What should I do while I wait on a busy road?

Get as far right as you can, or off at the next exit, turn the wheels away from traffic and put the hazards on. Stay belted in the car unless the car itself is in danger; then wait behind the guardrail, away from the vehicle. Keep your phone charged, and take out your wallet, keys, medication and registration before the car is loaded.

Can I schedule a tow for later instead of right now?

Yes. Shop transfers, dealer drops, cars bought online and long-distance moves can be booked for the window you choose instead of dispatched immediately, at the same flat quoted price. Call dispatch or send the details through the contact page, and businesses that move vehicles regularly can set up a fleet account with a direct line and one monthly invoice.

How it should work

How towing in New Jersey should work

You should know the price before anyone touches your car. Every call to The NJ Towing Service ends with a flat number, hook fee plus mileage for a tow or a single flat price for roadside work, quoted before the truck leaves Linden. It does not change at night, on a holiday or in a storm, and the receipt matches the quote.

You should decide where your car goes. We take it to your mechanic, your body shop, your dealer or your driveway, never to a storage yard we chose. On the Turnpike and the Parkway, the Authority's authorized garage brings the car off the highway and we take it from the exit or the garage's lot to the place you name.

And the right truck should come the first time. The dispatcher asks what you drive so an AWD SUV, an EV or a motorcycle rides on a flatbed, a box truck gets the right wrecker, and a dead battery gets a technician instead of a tow. One call, one price, an itemized receipt at the end. Call (908) 444-0129 at any hour, or see every service first.
