Tip #34: Choose the destination before the truck arrives: home, shop or dealer
You choose where your car goes, and the choice affects the price and how fast it gets fixed. Decide between home, an independent shop and a dealer before the truck arrives, and call ahead to confirm they can take it.

Call nowWhy decide on the call
Our price for a tow is a flat hook fee plus a per-mile rate to the destination, so the dispatcher needs the destination to give you the full quote before the truck rolls. Choosing it now also avoids the most expensive mistake: towing the car somewhere that cannot take it and paying to move it again.

Call nowThe three choices
**A dealer** makes sense for a car under warranty, a recall, a newer EV or a problem that needs factory software. Call first. Many dealer service departments are booked days out, and some will not accept a car outside service hours. Ask whether they have a night drop for keys and where a tow truck should leave the car.
**An independent shop** you already trust is often the fastest route to a repair, and is usually closer. Ask whether they can look at it soon, whether they work on your make, and whether there is room in the lot. Some shops charge to keep a car that sits after the work is done, so ask about that too.
**Home** is the right choice when it is late, the shop is closed and you want time to think, or when you plan to have a mobile mechanic look at it. Check that there is room for the truck to unload: a driveway with space, or a legal spot on the street. Some New Jersey towns restrict overnight street parking, so look at your town's rules if the car will sit outside.

If you do not have a shop, tell the dispatcher; home is a safe default that keeps the car under your control while you decide. We never take a car to a storage yard we picked. Our local towing covers moves within the area, and long-distance towing covers a car going to a dealer or shop farther away. The towing answers page has more on pricing.
Whichever you choose, give the dispatcher the full address and a contact name. A shop with three bays behind a fence, or a dealer with a separate service entrance on a side street, is easier to find when the driver knows what to look for. If the car is under warranty or a recall, the dealer is usually the better first stop even if it is a few miles farther, because a repair that the manufacturer pays for can save much more than the extra miles cost on the tow.
