Local tow company vs national roadside network: who actually shows up?
Most roadside plans and clubs do not own tow trucks; they pass your call to a local company that accepts it. Calling a local company directly can mean a quote and an arrival window from the people sending the truck, and many plans reimburse an out-of-network call with an itemized receipt.

Call nowHow roadside plans work
Roadside coverage comes from motor clubs, auto insurers, credit card benefits, car manufacturers and extended warranties. When you call one, the person who answers is usually in a call center, not at a tow yard. They take your details and send the job to a network of local towing companies, which accept or decline it. The company that accepts sends a truck.
That system works well much of the time. It can also mean waiting while the job is offered to several companies, or getting a truck from farther away than the closest one. During storms and rush hours, when every company is busy, plan jobs are not always first in line.

Call nowWhat calling a local company directly changes
When you call a local tow company, you are talking to the dispatcher who sends the truck. You can ask what truck is coming, how long it will take, and what it costs, and get a straight answer. Our dispatch is from Linden and covers every town within about 45 minutes; see the service area. A tow is a flat hook fee plus a per-mile rate to the destination you choose, quoted on the call, and roadside jobs are one flat price each, with no night, weekend, holiday or fuel surcharge.
You also choose the destination without the limits some plans set, such as a cap on miles or a list of approved shops.

Call nowReimbursement
Many roadside plans will reimburse some or all of a service you paid for yourself, as long as you submit an itemized receipt. Check your plan's terms before you count on it: some require you to call them first, some set limits by service type or distance. We give an itemized receipt with the pickup, the destination, the mileage and the charges, which is what reimbursement forms usually ask for.

Call nowWhen the plan is the better choice
If your plan fully covers a short tow or a jump start and you are somewhere safe with time to wait, using it can make sense. If you are on a dangerous shoulder, need a specific kind of truck such as a flatbed for an all-wheel-drive or electric car, need to go farther than the plan covers, or need a firm arrival window, calling a local company directly is often the better move.

Call nowWhat your plan covers, and when networks struggle
Roadside benefits are often spread across several places without the driver knowing it. A new car may include roadside coverage for a set number of years. Your auto policy may have a towing and labor endorsement. Some credit cards include a per-call benefit. Read each one before you need it, and save the phone numbers in your contacts.
Pay attention to the limits. Many plans cover a tow only up to a certain distance, or only to the nearest repair facility, and charge you for the rest. Some count service calls per year. Some cover the tow but not winching or a second truck. If your plan's limits will not get your car where you want it, a direct call may cost about the same and give you more control over the destination.
On the first snowy morning of the season, during a heat wave, or on a holiday weekend, every towing company in the area is busy. Networks cast a wider net to find someone who can take the job, which can stretch waits. A local company can tell you honestly how long the wait is, so you can decide whether to wait, get a ride, or arrange the tow for later. Ask for an arrival window and a call when the truck is on the way.

Call nowQuestions to ask any provider
Think about where you drive most, too. If you commute on Routes 1 & 9, Route 22 or I-78, or live and work within our area, saving a direct number for a local company means one less call center between you and a truck when something goes wrong. It costs nothing to have the number in your phone.
Who is actually sending the truck? What kind of truck? What is the total price to my destination? Are there any surcharges? Will I get an itemized receipt? The answers tell you most of what you need to know.
